DescriptionRug attributable to the Fereghan (Ferahan) region of northwest Persia (Iran). This style of rug generally identified as Ferahan Sarouk. Exemplifies characteristics of late 19th century workshop production of the region. Central medallion (“sunburst” design) floats on an unusual green ground of the main field. An red arabesque pattern surrounds the medallion. Herati blossom and plant motifs appear tightly packed in main field, medallion, and corner pieces. Main border similar to Bijâr (Herati) as well as turtle/samovar designs used in rugs throughout the Mideast, recalling 16th–17th century east Persian design precedents. Midnight blue and use of green dyes are features of antique Ferahan carpets. The floral imagery in this rug recalls the designs and motifs found in Persian garden carpets.
