DescriptionWoman’s wrapper from Igarra, Nigeria, woven by a woman on a vertical loom in two pieces which have been stitched together. Handspun cotton, primarily dyed with indigo, with narrow plain stripes in white and light blue, ikat stripes in white and light blue, and ikat patterns in yellow. Edges hemmed. This is the traditional dress of Igarra women. An elderly woman reported that near the end of a woman’s life, she must maintain at least two such wrapper in perfect condition, one for her burial, and one to pass down to her eldest daughter. Cloths of this type have been influenced by traditional Yoruba indigo striped wrappers.
