DescriptionReligious painting of Emperor John and other pilgrims on six reed boats traveling to an island church in Lake Tana. Top left boat carries swordsmen; far left boat has horn blowers; center left boat has drummers; lowest boat has priests w/hand-held crosses. Boat with animal heads fore & aft carries Emperor John, protected by umbrella. Upper right boat carries a woman and man. Each boat is steered by an oarsman. On far right of island there is a Psalmist. Congregant couples appear on island and on shore. At bottom left, women prepare their hair & scarify their faces. At bottom right, swimmers are in lake. Signed center bottom: Artist Jenbere Wondimu.
