DescriptionReligious painting of “Emperor John Making a Pilgrimage Across Lake Tana.” Emperor John is in a boat to the right, while his Queen is in a boat on the far left. They travel in reed boats to the church of St. Mary on Zege Island and to the Church of St. George on Deq Island, on the right. In each group of reed boats, one carries an Ark of the Covenant draped with textiles and protected by an umbrella. Village houses appear below with congregants, musicians and merchants on the shore and swimmers and fishermen in the water. Signed on bottom left by artist Ta. [Tamrat] Mamo.
