DescriptionPainting, “King Menelik Observes the Demera Holiday.” Demera is the bonfire on the even of Meskel, which celebrates the finding of the True Cross. Central bonfire flanked by dancing priests in colorful robes carrying Arks of the Covenant and processional crosses. The faithful wear white and carry torches (chibbo) to the fire. Swordsmen, drummers and a horn player accompany them. King Menelik appears under a pavilion at the top right. Signature by artist Tamrat Mamo.
