CHIN 266A: Visual China: Moving Pictures

View All Collections
Explores the visual culture of China by asking: How do we move through pictures, and how do pictures move us? To answer these questions, the course examines in depth a series of representative works, from traditional Chinese scroll painting to China’s modern visual culture of image and word, including Jazz Age popular magazines, classic Shanghai film, woodcut prints, propaganda posters, and a range of comics genres, from pantomime to graphic novel. Students acquire skills in media interpretation while learning the cultural history of China.
